Joe Simpson’s “Touching the Void” recounts his harrowing near-death experience during a 1985 mountaineering expedition in the Peruvian Andes. After summitting the previously unclimbed Siula Grande, Simpson suffered a severe leg injury. His climbing partner, Simon Yates, was forced to cut their connecting rope, believing Simpson was dead.
