About the Author

John Polidori (1795–1821) was an English writer and physician, best known for his short story The Vampyre. He served as Lord Byron's personal physician and was present at the famous 1816 gathering in Switzerland where the challenge to write a ghost story led to both his work and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Polidori's contribution is widely considered the first modern vampire story in English literature, establishing many tropes still used today.
