Description

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, The Sympathizer is a genre-defying novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen that offers a gripping, darkly comic portrayal of identity, politics, and war. The story follows a half-Vietnamese, half-French communist double agent during and after the Vietnam War, who is embedded in the South Vietnamese army and later relocated to Los Angeles with other exiles.

Told through a confessional narrative, the novel explores themes of betrayal, cultural duality, and ideological conflict. With sharp wit and penetrating insight, Nguyen challenges dominant narratives of war and memory, painting a nuanced portrait of the refugee experience and the limits of loyalty.

  • A fresh, subversive perspective on the Vietnam War and American imperialism

  • Combines political intrigue with literary brilliance and emotional depth
