Description

Ammianus Marcellinus, the last great Roman historian, offers a compelling chronicle of the Roman Empire during a tumultuous twenty-five-year period (A.D. 354-378). This work covers the reigns of Constantius, Julian, Jovian, Valentinian I, and Valens, providing invaluable eyewitness accounts of pivotal military events such as the Battle of Strasbourg and the Goth's Revolt. Marcellinus vividly portrays an empire grappling with excessive taxation, widespread corruption, the financial ruin of its middle classes, and a significant decline in army morale, laying bare the foundational issues that would ultimately lead to the fall of Rome.
