At an abandoned Italian villa in the aftermath of World War II, four damaged individuals converge. Hana, a Canadian nurse, cares for a nameless, severely burned English patient. Joining them are Caravaggio, a Canadian thief and spy, and Kip, a Sikh sapper from India.
