About the Author

The Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism and is considered by many to be the living Buddha. Born Lhamo Thondup in 1935, he was recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama at the age of two. He assumed full temporal power of Tibet in 1950 and has since become a global advocate for peace, human rights, and interfaith understanding. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his nonviolent struggle for the liberation of Tibet.
