Myths of the Hindus and Buddhists
HarperCollins
Paperback
Description
Myths of the Hindus and Buddhists is a timeless and richly detailed collection of ancient Indian stories retold by two of the early 20th century's most respected scholars of Eastern spirituality and philosophy. Drawing from classical Sanskrit and Pali sources, the book presents vivid retellings of key myths that have shaped the spiritual and moral landscape of South Asia.
Covering tales from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Puranas, Jataka stories, and Buddhist scriptures, the authors explore themes of dharma (righteousness), karma (action and consequence), reincarnation, and divine intervention. With accompanying artwork and a scholarly yet poetic narrative voice, the book serves as both a literary and educational resource on Indian mythological traditions.

About the Authors
Ananda K. Coomaraswamy (1877–1947) was a pioneering Indian art historian and metaphysician. He is widely known for his scholarship in Indian art, symbolism, and traditional metaphysics, especially for bringing Eastern philosophical ideas to the West. His writing bridges the disciplines of aesthetics, spirituality, and cultural studies. Sister Nivedita (Margaret Elizabeth Noble, 1867–1911) was an Irish educator, author, and disciple of Swami Vivekananda. She played a significant role in India’s spiritual and nationalist renaissance in the early 20th century. A prolific writer, she devoted her life to Indian culture and its preservation through education and storytelling.
