In Tokyo during summer, Claire tutors Mieko, who is twelve, in a room within a disused hotel. Claire also rests at her grandparents' home, where she daydreams, plays Tetris, and hears noises from outside. Her grandparents left Korea during civil war more than half a century ago and never went back. Once in Japan, they started Shiny, a pachinko parlour. It remains open, attracting visitors through flashing lights and luck. Claire expects to travel with her grandparents to Korea. She and Mieko slowly become close, and Mieko wishes to see the pachinko parlour.
