Descripción

This book recounts an empire: a group of states that lived under one identity for much of the century, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. It opens as Soviet troops enter the author's Polish hometown in 1939, then reaches the period just before the Berlin Wall fell, when the USSR shook and died. The author journeyed thousands of miles and talked with hundreds of ordinary Soviet citizens about their extraordinary lives and the terror they were leaving behind. The book explores empire, identity, daily life, and terror under a single Soviet identity.

Why You Should Read?

  • Follow the story of an empire that held many states under one identity for most of the century.
  • Meet ordinary Soviet people who speak about their extraordinary lives and the terror they were leaving.
  • Travel across thousands of miles to hear how the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics convulsed and died.
  • Learn how many states lived under one identity for most of the century before the USSR died.

About the Author

Ryszard Kapuściński was a Polish journalist, photographer, and writer. He lived from 4 March 1932 to 23 January 2007. His writing earned many respected awards, and he was seen as a possible Nobel Prize in Literature candidate. His book-form private journals drew praise and criticism because they mixed reporting with literary allegory and magical realism. During Communist rule, he was the Polish Press Agency's sole correspondent in Africa as decolonization unfolded. He also worked in South America and Asia. From 1956 to 1981, he covered 27 revolutions and coups. He lost his job after backing the pro-democracy Solidarity movement in his homeland.
