Danny is five years old and, in the words of Mr Hallorann, a "shiner", full of psychic power. When his father becomes caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, Danny's visions grow out of control. Winter closes in and blizzards cut them off. The hotel is meant to be empty, yet a lady appears in Room 217, masked guests ride the elevator, and hedges shaped like animals seem alive. Somewhere in the hotel is an evil force, and it is beginning to shine too. This is a horror story about fear, isolation and a child's strange gift.
