The New York Trilogy gathers three interconnected novels that play with detective and mystery fiction. In the first, Daniel Quinn, a mystery writer, becomes a private investigator and loses himself in a strange case. The second follows Blue, a private eye hired by White to watch Black, until he becomes absorbed in Black's life. The third concerns Fanshawe, a gifted novelist who vanishes and leaves his family and work behind. Across these stories, the book explores identity, reality, and philosophical questions. They also use elements of standard detective fiction.
