Hot Chocolate on Thursday is set in a quiet neighbourhood of Tokyo, across a bridge, where a seasonal cherry blossom sits on the river. Close by is the Marble Cafe. There a woman writes in a notebook, and a young waiter makes her favourite hot drink. Each wonders about the other, and about the lives of the other customers. The book is a set of slice-of-life moments that begin and end with the woman ordering her regular hot chocolate. Its themes are small daily acts, unexpected meetings, and how one act can reach beyond a single life. E. Madison Shimoda translated it.
