Black and British

David Olusoga's book explores the very long connection between Britain, Africa and the Caribbean. According to the book, it goes back to Roman times, Elizabethan 'blackamoors' and the empire built on the slave trade. The book describes Black Britons at Trafalgar and in the two world wars, and says nineteenth-century industry relied on slavery in America. This revised edition adds a chapter on the Windrush scandal and the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests. The book presents black British history as part of the nation's culture and economy, belonging to all.

About the Author

David Olusoga is British-Nigerian and works as a historian, writer and broadcaster; his film-making has won a BAFTA. At the University of Manchester, he is Professor of Public History. His BBC historical documentaries, writing for The Guardian and authorship of Black and British: A Forgotten History (2016) are part of his work.
