The Trial

The Trial tells of Josef K., a bank official who is arrested by an authority he cannot reach. Neither he nor the reader learns what crime he is accused of. Although he stays free, he becomes tangled in a legal process that makes no sense to him, and he works to clear his name. The book deals with feeling cut off from others, the power of faceless systems, and deep unease about existence. The book was never completed, and it contains a chapter that ends the story by design, suddenly.

About the Author

Franz Kafka was a German-language Jewish novelist and writer from Prague, born on 3 July 1883 and died on 3 June 1924. He came from a middle-class German-speaking household. After legal training, he worked in law and insurance, yet felt writing was his actual calling. His stories mix realism with the fantastic and often follow lonely people caught by strange events and unaccountable official systems. Among his best remembered titles are the 1915 novella The Metamorphosis and two novels, The Trial (1925) and The Castle (1926).
