He masterfully blends elements of blues and jazz, speech and song, to create a unique and powerful voice that illuminated the Black experience in 1920s and 1930s America. Through sharply etched vignettes and poignant portrayals, Hughes made white America aware of the vibrant Black culture thriving in its midst.
